Removing carbon from the atmosphere through regenerative farming by supporting the business model of farmers. We support farmers in their transition to lower their environmental footprint and generate carbon credits through attractive financing solutions, extension services, and access to a marketplace to sell their credits.
What is Carbon Farming?
Carbon Farming is a term that is heard more often. It means that farmers are being paid for storing carbon in their soil. At Rabobank, we see this as an essential step where revenues from carbon credits can help accelerate the transition to regenerative farming at scale.
Future-proof food system
The threat of climate change along with the rising global population and demand for food put more pressure on farmers to provide a more sustainable food system. We encourage farmers to tackle this effectively by facilitating farmers to move towards future-proof food production system while gaining more revenues from their farms.
Strengthening ecosystems and improving the climate
Regenerative farming encourages moving away from synthetic fertilizers, chemicals and tillage, and promotes adding cover crops and implementing crop rotations. It is a unique way for farmers to contribute to reversing climate change while naturally promoting biodiversity, improving water quality, and enhancing the soil’s organic content and overall health.
New revenue with Carbon Credits
Regenerative farming practices uses natural processes to enhance the soil’s ability to capture and store atmospheric carbon. We enable farmers to unlock new revenue streams by providing access to the carbon credits market as they adopt regenerative farming practices.
How it works
Get in touch
Reach out to us and find out if you are eligible to participate in our pilots.
Import your data
We provide access to our farmer portal where you can import and verify data from your farm management system.
Create future regenerative plan
Together with agronomic experts we help you set up plans for coming years to implement regenerative practices.
We use greenhouse gas models to create a baseline of the soil organic carbon in your land and the impact of your regenerative practices.
We generate a carbon credit, register your contribution, and provide you with a new revenue stream.
Frequently asked questions
Our pilots currently focus on mid to large scale row crop farmers in the US and The Netherlands. It is important that historical farm management data is available.
Through tailored agronomic advice and on-site soil samples, together with agronomic experts you determine which land management practices lead to more storage of organic matter and thus carbon in the soils.
Broadly speaking, up to 7 main practices can increase soil organic carbon on your land. These practices include:
- reduced/no tillage
- reduced inputs
- planting of cover crops
- crop rotations
- optimised grazing patterns
- species composition
The price of carbon credits is dependent on many factors and the price fluctuate often. We expect to be able to sell each carbon credit for 25 – 50 USD.
We see it as our mission to work together with farmers and companies to reduce and remove carbon from the atmosphere. Our unique position as a bank with strong connections in the Food and Agri industry enables us to activate the movement needed for change.
Considering Rabobanks close relation with the Food and Agri industry, it is in our best interest to create a sustainable food system and have clients with durable business models and healthy soils. As Rabobank we want to help rural clients in our portfolio, at the same time, we are looking for ways to reinvent our own business model. The Rabo Carbon Bank charges a transaction fee when credits are sold to sustain operations, the platform, monitoring and verification costs. Most proceeds from credits go directly to farmers to help cover implementation costs of the measures, potential yield drops, and serve as additional revenue.
