No, Carbon Insights is entirely voluntary and not obligatory. Only when you sign up for the feature, you will see the CO₂ emissions of your expenses. You can unsubscribe at any time.
More and more CO₂ is released into the air causing climate change. Carbon Insights provides you with insights into your CO₂ impact and helps you make sustainable choices. Let's reduce CO₂ together and combat climate change. Climate change is one of the transitions where Rabobank wants to make a positive change.
Carbon Insights - with your permission - looks at payment transactions from your Rabobank personal bank account(s). The average CO₂ impact per transaction differs greatly so every payment is categorized to calculate your CO₂-emissions for that category. The CO₂ impact of your payments is then determined by an automated model. Do you have suggestions to improve our calculation model? Then send your feedback to carbonbankretail@rabobank.nl. That way we can continue to improve.
Carbon Insights provides insight into your CO₂ impact based on spending categories, for example: groceries, transport, clothing, holidays and other. The 'other' category is for payments our system can't categorise yet, for these payments the CO₂ impact is calculated based on an average.
The 'other' category is for payments our system can't categorise yet. Payments within the 'other' category cannot be linked to categories such as groceries, transport, clothing and holidays. Think of a payment request for example. For these payments the CO₂ impact is calculated based on an average. In the future we hope to match these payments to the correct spending category.
Your payments are placed into different spending categories and the CO₂ impact is then based on that category. Example categories are: groceries, transport or vacation, and other. We calculate the average per spending category. You can fill in the voluntary profile questions to make sure the calculation is more precise related to your preferences. The calculation are performed by an automated model, based on data from a global climate impact database. Please consult the OSR-website for more information.
That's right! The model is based on an estimate. In terms of CO₂-emissions, it does not only matter whére you buy but also whát you buy. Our model cannot see this, as we only look at the payment and not at your receipt. The profile questions help us in making our calculations more specific for you. The profile questions are voluntary and are only used for Carbon Insights.
We calculate your average CO₂ impact per month based on your payments of the past 12 months.
At this moment in time, Carbon Insights can calculate the average CO₂ impact for a one person household. We would like to show you the comparison with a household of more than one person soon. When this is possible, we will show this at Carbon Insights in the Rabobank app.
- 1 kg of CO₂ is equivalent to washing your clothes twice.
- 10 kg of CO₂ is equivalent to 10 minutes of showering
- 50 kg of CO₂ is equivalent to 4 kilograms of beef
- 100 kg of CO₂ is equivalent to driving from Amsterdam to Paris
- 1.000 kg of CO₂ is equivalent to flying from Amsterdam to New York
To use Carbon Insights you need the following:
- A private bank account at Rabobank
- Rabo Online Banking app
Unfortunately, it isn't possible yet to use Carbon Insights without a Rabobank bank account. If you want to open a Rabobank bank account, please visit our website. Savings- and business accounts are not included. For the calculations we look at the past 12 months of transactions.
Do you have multiple bank accounts in the Rabo App? Then all payment accounts are included in the calculation. Savings and business accounts are not included.

The profile questions add accuracy to the calculation of your CO₂ impact. For example, if you use solar energy, your CO₂ impact differs from someone using regular energy. Only, the calculations will be less accurate as the calculation will use averages to calculate your CO₂ impact.
