Dutch Deposit Guarantee
Thanks to the Dutch Deposit Guarantee your money is automatically protected up to €100,000.
Security for your savings
Have you saved money, for example for a new washing machine, a vacation, your children or your pension? Then you want your savings to be safe. As an entrepreneur, you also want to take no risk with your business (savings) funds. Under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee, your money is protected up to €100,000 if your bank goes bankrupt. This protection is automatic. The Dutch Central Bank (De Nederlandsche Bank) implements this scheme, and we participate.
How does the Dutch Deposit Guarantee work?
If a bank goes bankrupt, you won't lose your money. Your money is protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. In most cases, you will get your money back via De Nederlandsche Bank within 7 working days.
The Dutch Deposit Guarantee automatically protects the money that you have in an account with Rabobank and/or Rabo Groen Bank. This applies to both private and business accounts. The Dutch Deposit Guarantee applies, for example, to:
If your (business) account is protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee, you will find this on your financial annual statements and periodically on your account statement.
Among other things, the Dutch Deposit Guarantee does not apply to:
The protection of the Dutch Deposit Guarantee applies to all private clients.
As a business client, you are also protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. This applies to large companies, small businesses, and self-employed persons. It also applies to private pension companies and to annuity Ltds.
The following (in particular business) clients do not have protection under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee:
Protection by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee
Balances held with Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. (Rabobank) are protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. also uses trade names such as: Rabobank, RaboDirect, Rabobank.be, and Rabobank International. In addition, all local Rabobanks use their own trade names. An overview of the trade names that we use can be found here. All funds held under these trade names are protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee.
In addition, Rabo Groen Bank B.V. also has a banking license of its own and is covered separately by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. Therefore deposits with Rabo Groen Bank B.V. are separately protected in addition to the protection of balances with Rabobank.
The protection offered by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee is automatic. You do not need to apply for the compensation. On its website, De Nederlandsche Bank explains how the Dutch Deposit Guarantee works, what happens if a bank goes bankrupt, and what procedure is followed to ensure that you receive the compensation.
Read how the Dutch Deposit Guarantee works on the website of De Nederlandsche Bank.
The Dutch Deposit Guarantee automatically protects your money in bank accounts from 1 eurocent through €100,000. De Nederlandsche Bank calculates how much money you will receive. The compensation is capped at €100,000 per person per bank. Below we explain what this means.
In some situations, you may temporarily have an extra high balance. For example, if you have sold your home or after payment of a pension, disability benefit, redundancy payment or life insurance. In such situations, an additional protection of up to €500,000 applies to the standard protection of €100,000 per person per bank. This additional protection applies until 6 months after payment of the money into your account. This temporary higher protection applies to private individuals only, and therefore not to enterprises.
For more information about the temporary higher protection, please visit the website of De Nederlandsche Bank.
Enterprises are protected up to a maximum of €100,000 under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. This applies both to incorporated enterprises (such as the Dutch BV or NV, stichting of vereniging) and to unincorporated enterprises (such as the Dutch CV or VOF, or a partnership). This protection is separate from the protection of the private balances of the persons involved in an enterprise, such as owners, members, directors, associates, and partners. An exception applies to sole proprietorships (including self-employed persons and freelancers). For sole proprietorships, the balances in the business account are added to the private balances of the owner.
Klaas and Karin are the two partners of a partnership (Dutch maatschap)
Klaas and Karin do not have any private accounts with Rabobank. The business account of the partnership has a balance of €95,000. Because the partnership has independent coverage under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee (up to a maximum of €100,000), the balance of €95,000 is fully covered.
Sander and Anouk are partners of a partnership (Dutch maatschap)
The business account of the partnership has a balance of €120,000. Privately, they also have a joint and/or account with a balance of €30,000. The balance of the joint account is divided equally among the account holders. Both Sander’s private balance of €15,000 and Anouk’s private balance of €15,000 are fully covered under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. Because the balance of the partnership exceeds the maximum amount covered (€ 100,000), the €120,000 balance of the partnership is only covered up to €100,000. The remaining €20,000 is not covered under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee.
Emiel and Petra are partners within a general partnership (Dutch VOF)
The VOF has an account with Rabobank with a balance of €200,000. Emiel and Petra do not bank privately at Rabobank. Because the balance of the partnership exceeds the maximum amount covered (€100,000), the €200,000 balance of the VOF is only covered up to €100,000. The remaining €100,000 is not covered under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee.
Bart and Anne are partners within a general partnership (VOF)
The VOF has an account with Rabobank with a balance of €200,000. Bart and Anne also have a private account with Rabobank, each with a balance of €50,000. Both Bart’s €50,000 private balance and Anne’s €50,000 private balance are fully covered under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. Because the balance of the VOF exceeds the maximum amount covered (€100,000), the €200,000 balance of the VOF is only covered up to €100,000. The remaining €100,000 is not covered under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee.
Martin has a sole proprietorship and banks both professionally and privately with Rabobank
Privately, he has a savings account of €50,000. The balance in the account of the sole proprietorship is €40,000. Martin's personal funds and those of the sole proprietorship are added together. Martin’s total balance is €90,000 (€40,000 plus €50,000). The total balance is fully covered by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee under Martin’s private cover.
Iris has a transport company in the form of a private limited company (Dutch BV)
Iris has both a business and a private banking account with Rabobank. Iris has a private savings account with a balance of €50,000. The balance of the BV is €90,000. As a private person, Iris is protected up to a maximum of €100,000 under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. This means that her private balance of €50,000 is fully protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. The BV is also protected up to a maximum of €100,000 under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. This means that the BV’s balance of €90,000 is fully protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee.
Deposit Guarantee Scheme Information Sheet
If you have money in an account that is protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee, we will provide you with the Depositor Information Sheet. More information about the Deposit Guarantee can be found on this information sheet. The fact that you receive this Information Sheet does not mean that you will receive a payment under the Deposit Guarantee. To be entitled to this, you must also be protected as a person / an account holder. This is the case for all private clients (natural persons), but some categories of business clients are excluded from coverage. See ‘Customers without protection’ for an overview of excluded client categories.
Below you will find the Depositor Information Sheets for Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. and for Rabo Groen Bank B.V. Both are available in Dutch as well as English.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a bank savings account in which you save money to repay your mortgage later? Such as a Rabo OpbouwSpaarrekening along with a Rabobank OpbouwHypotheek? Then your savings in that mortgage savings account will first be used to repay the debt on your mortgage (which decreases as a result). For this amount, you will not be entitled to compensation under the Deposit Guarantee.
If you no longer have a mortgage debt, your savings in the mortgage savings account will be reimbursed under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee up to a maximum of €100,000. Any balance in the savings account that exceeds the amount of the mortgage (but this is not very common) is also eligible for compensation under the Deposit Guarantee.
No, investments are excluded from protection under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. But there is also the Investor Compensation Scheme. This scheme protects individuals and small businesses in the event of bankruptcy of the bank if the bank did not observe the rules of asset segregation.
If your balance exceeds the amount protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee and Rabobank goes bankrupt, this does not mean that you automatically lose the balance in excess of €100,000. The trustee in bankruptcy will then include your claim as a creditor's claim on the liquidation assets. In most cases, you will be a preferred creditor (which means you will be more at the front of the queue of creditors).
Here are some examples to better understand the Dutch Deposit Guarantee:
Calculation example for a family with two underage children
A family consisting of mother Carla and father Johan, daughter Anna (14) and son Marcel (12) all have their own account with Rabobank. The balance in Carla’s account amounts to €2,000, and Johan’s balance amounts to €1,000. Together, Carla and Johan also have a joint (savings) account with a balance of €20,000. Anna and Marcel each have their own savings account with a balance of €5,000 and €3,000 respectively.
What is protected under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee?
To start with, all family members, i.e. parents Carla and Johan as well as children Anna and Marcel, have their own independent protection under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. The amounts in the accounts of minors are therefore not added to the balance of the parents.
What amount of each family member is protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee?
The balance in the joint account of the parents Carla and Johan is divided between both parents in proportion to ownership (this is usually 50/50).Carla’s protection amounts to €12,000 (€2,000 from her own account and €10,000 from the joint account). For Johan, the protection is €11,000 (the balance of €1,000 from his own account and €10,000 from the joint account). The children Anna and Marcel are individually protected by the Deposit Guarantee. Anna is protected for an amount of €5,000 and Marcel for an amount of €3,000.
None of the balances in this example exceed the maximum protection of €100,000, so all balances are protected under the Deposit Guarantee.
Calculation example for a wealthy couple
A wealthy couple, Marie and Victor, each have a savings account of their own. The balance in Marie’s savings account is €60,000, and Victor’s balance in his own savings account is €50,000. They also have a joint account with a balance of €120,000, which is divided between both partners in proportion to ownership (this is usually 50/50). This means that Marie has a total balance of €120,000 (€60,000 plus €60,000) and Victor a total balance of €110,000 (€50,000 plus €60,000). Both partners are protected up to a balance of €100,000 under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. This means that Marie is not protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee for the remaining balance of €20,000 and Victor is not protected for the remaining balance of €10,000.
Calculation example for a private client with a sole proprietorship
Ellen and her partner Erik are banking with Rabobank. Together they have a joint account with a balance of €60,000. Ellen has a hair salon in the form of a sole proprietorship with a business account with a balance of €50,000. The balance in the joint account is divided between both partners in proportion to ownership (this is usually 50/50). The balance in the business account of the sole proprietorship is added to the private balance of Ellen (the owner of the sole proprietorship). This protects Erik up to €30,000 (half of the balance in the joint account), while Ellen is protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee up to €80,000 (half of the balance in the joint account plus the balance in the business account of the sole proprietorship). Both claims are below the maximum limit of the Deposit Guarantee of €100,000 and are therefore wholly protected.
Calculation example for Rabo Groen Bank BV
A wealthy couple, Maartje and Vincent, each have their own savings account with Rabobank. The balance in Maartje’s savings account is €60,000, and Vincent’s balance in his own savings account is €50,000. In addition, they have a joint account (GroenSparen) with Rabo Groen Bank with a balance of €90,000. Rabobank and Rabo Groen Bank each have their own banking license. This means that the €100,000 maximum protection of the Dutch Deposit Guarantee applies to each separate bank. Maartje’s balance with Rabobank (€60,000) is protected and Vincent’s €50,000 balance with Rabobank is also protected. The balance in the joint account with Rabo Groen Bank is also fully covered, as it does not exceed the maximum protection of €200,000 (both partners have maximum protection of €100,000 per person).
