iDIN, the identification service operated by Currence, has been acquired by the Belgian identity app itsme. For Dutch consumers and business platforms such as online retailers, insurers and other connected organisations, this marks a shift to a broader European platform for secure online identification. From mid 2026, consumers will be able to use the itsme app alongside their bank app to identify themselves with iDIN. iDIN will remain available for at least two more years.
Secure and trusted identification
iDIN is an initiative by Currence, a collaboration between the major Dutch banks. It allows people in the Netherlands to identify themselves securely through their bank app when using online platforms from retailers, insurers and other digital services. For the roughly 300 connected websites, iDIN provides certainty about customer identity and removes the need for their own login systems. Around 13 million people in the Netherlands can currently use iDIN.
European identity app with proven track record
itsme is an independent company founded by Belgian banks and telecom operators. It is an established player in digital identity and is recognised as a European identity solution at the highest level of assurance under the eIDAS regulation. The app is known for its ease of use, accessibility and strong security.
In Belgium, itsme functions not only as a digital ID for commercial services, similar to iDIN, but also for government websites, comparable to DigiD in the Netherlands. More than 80 percent of the adult population in Belgium use and trust the app. The acquisition of iDIN marks itsme’s first major step outside Belgium.
Transition from iDIN to itsme
The transition from iDIN to itsme will begin in spring 2026 after the conditions agreed upon between the parties have been fulfilled and is expected to be completed in 2028. From June 2026, consumers will be able to log in to connected services using the itsme app in addition to iDIN. In 2028, iDIN will be fully integrated into itsme. Both consumers and connected organisations will be kept informed about every phase of the integration process.
