Exchange damaged money
Although damaged money is legal tender, shops may refuse money that is very damaged. If you find a tattered banknote in your pocket, you can exchange it at De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). You will receive a new bank note, fresh off the press, provided you have at least half of the old banknote. You can also exchange damaged coins.
You cannot exchange damaged money at our branches.
Do you suspect you have counterfeit money? Report it.
Counterfeit money is worthless, and so you cannot exchange it for real money.
You can send the money to De Nederlandsche Bank. Alternatively, hand it over at one of our local branches and we will send it to De Nederlandsche Bank for you. If the money turns out to be genuine, you will be reimbursed.
