From insight to action: how Rabobank uses nature data to drive sustainability
As a cooperative bank, Rabobank aims to help customers bring their environmental impact back to planetary boundaries. A key part of that mission is integrating nature into our work. But what does that really mean? The short videos below explain how Rabobank uses nature data to better understand land use, water, and pollution – and how that can contribute to meaningful action. Watch and discover why nature data is crucial for a more sustainable future.

Measuring nature? These videos explains how – and why it matters
These videos complement our 2024 publication Nature Vision & Approach, which focuses on three core themes: land use, water, and pollution. Our approach includes:
At the heart of every step? Nature data.
Why nature data matters
In five short videos, Marie-Claire Franzen (Lead Nature) and Joost Wegman (Lead Sustainability Data Analytics) walk you through how we work with nature data – and why it’s so essential.
What is nature data?
Just as ‘climate’ works with greenhouse gas emissions, nature can also work with certain metrics and data. In that way it can become more tangible what relevant impacts are and what good ways are to mitigate them. But, it’s less straightforward than with climate. Joost introduces three key types.
What are our main objectives?
To support our customers in their sustainability journey and strengthen their resilience, we need better insight into their impacts and risks. Marie-Claire shares the key objectives we’ve defined.
What are our main challenges?
Joost explores the limits of global datasets, the complexity of using single metrics, and the importance of location-specific data.
How do we deal with this?
Marie-Claire outlines the guiding criteria we’ve developed to ensure our approach is effective and aligned with our broader sustainability goals.
We know the journey ahead is long, and we don’t have all the answers yet. That’s why we believe collaboration is key. As a cooperative bank, we actively engage with our clients and work with external partners – so we can learn together and move forward, together.
