Money you deposited is possibly counterfeit

If you have just made a cash deposit in euros but the amount has not yet been credited to your account in full, this is because we suspect the money is counterfeit. It is, of course, extremely frustrating when you lose your money and cannot use it. We explain below why we do this and what you can expect.

What we do with your money

  1. We confiscate your money
We do not deposit any suspected counterfeit banknotes in your account. To see how many banknotes are involved, look under ‘Denominatie’ [’Denomination’] on your receipt.
  2. We investigate whether the notes are genuine
Once we have completed our investigation, we send the notes to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). We have to do this by law. DNB will re-examine the money and determine whether it is counterfeit.
  3. We will refund your money or send you a letter
If your money is not counterfeit, we will deposit it in your account within three weeks. If your money is counterfeit, we will send you a letter within six weeks. You will not receive a refund.
