Contactless payments using your smartwatch

If you pay with your smartwatch, different limits apply than if you make a contactless payment with your debit card. Each payment, regardless of the amount, counts towards your usual limit for payments with your debit card.

There are no extra costs associated with paying with your smartwatch. There is no additional charge for the Rabo App you need either.

If you receive a notification saying ‘card refused’, this may be because your mobile phone number is not known to us. Check you are using the correct telephone number. You can change it in your profile in the Rabo App.

Smartwatch payments use NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. NFC is a wireless way to exchange small amounts of information within a radius of a few centimeters. So it's a wireless means of communication. The chip (with an antenna around it) in the smartwatch communicates with another NFC device.

As soon as your smartwatch no longer registers a heartbeat, it will usually ask for your PIN code to make a payment. This means it is often not possible for others to use your smartwatch for payments. But it’s wise to block your digital debit card on your smartwatch as soon as possible to make sure someone else can’t pay with your watch. You can do this via the smartwatch app. In the future, you can also do this via the Rabo App.

All (retail) customers with a Rabobank debit card and Rabo App or Rabobank Online can use contactless payments.
