Using a debit card abroad
You can use our debit cards to make payments and withdraw cash almost everywhere in the world.
Making payments and withdrawing money abroad
Depending on which debit card you have, the standard setting enables you to make payments and withdraw money throughout Europe or around the world.
Configuring your debit card for use outside Europe
Your debit card’s standard setting enables use within Europe. If you’d like to use your card outside Europe, you can change the setting.
Debit card abroad
You can pay in euros or in a foreign currency at most store card readers. This is quick and easy.
Payment fees abroad
You do not pay extra fees for euro payments abroad. For payments in a foreign currency, we charge a 1.4% exchange rate surcharge per payment.
Card readers limits abroad
You can spend up to €5,000 per week abroad. With a Rabo Youth Account, the limit is €1,250 per week. With a Rabo Premium Package, the limit is €10,000 per week.
NB: foreign banks may set lower limits. We cannot change this.
When abroad, you can also withdraw cash from ATMs, including foreign currency. Fees apply. The amount you pay depends on your package. Read more about fees, terms and conditions
In addition, foreign banks may charge their own costs for using the ATM or may use a less favorable exchange rate. These costs appear on the ATM screen.
ATM limits when you are abroad
You can withdraw up to €1,250 per week using your debit card abroad. If you have a Rabo Youth Account, you can withdraw up to €500 per week. If you have a Rabo Ample Package, you can withdraw up to €5,000 per week. You can change your card limit temporarily or permanently in Rabo Online Banking. Foreign banks may set a lower limit. We cannot influence this.
You can pay contactless abroad when your debit card and the card reader both support it. This works when the contactless payment logo is displayed on your debit card and on the card reader.
Contactless payments by phone abroad
You can also pay contactless abroad with your phone when your debit card is in Apple Wallet on your iPhone or in Google Wallet on your Android phone. The same rules that apply to debit card use abroad also apply to phone payments. The only difference: you cannot withdraw cash contactless from ATMs. For Apple Pay outside Europe, you must switch on your debit card for use abroad. You can do this yourself using Rabo Online Banking.
You can check the exchange rate for a foreign currency in Rabo Online Banking. Go to Settings - debit cards and credit cards – debit cards. Select your debit card. Choose Calculate foreign exchange rate. If you do not use Rabo Online Banking, you can use the link below to check the exchange rate.
