Using a debit card abroad
You can use our debit cards to make payments and withdraw cash almost everywhere in the world.
Making payments and withdrawing money abroad
Depending on which debit card you have, the standard setting enables you to make payments and withdraw money throughout Europe or around the world.
Configuring your debit card for use outside Europe
Your debit card’s standard setting enables use within Europe. If you’d like to use your card outside Europe, you can change the setting.
Your debit card abroad
Making payments in a foreign currency or euros at card readers in stores is quick and easy.
Fees for making payments abroad
You don’t pay additional fees for euro payments made using your debit card abroad. If you use your debit card to pay in a foreign currency, we apply an exchange rate surcharge of 1.4% per payment.
Limits applying to card readers abroad
You can spend up to €5,000 a week using your debit card abroad. If you have a Rabo Youth Account, the maximum is €1,250 per week. If you have a Rabo Premium Package, you can spend up to €10,000 a week using your card abroad. NB: foreign banks may apply a lower limit. We have no influence over this.
When abroad, you can withdraw cash, including foreign currency, quickly and easily using your debit card at an ATM. Fees are payable for this. The fees you pay depend on your package. View the fees.
In addition, foreign banks may also charge their own costs for the use of the ATM and/or apply less favorable exchange rates. These costs are displayed on the ATM screen.
Limits applying to ATMs abroad
You can withdraw up to €1,250 a week using your debit card abroad. If you have a Rabo Youth Account, the maximum is €500 per week. If you have a Rabo Ample Package, you can withdraw up to €5,000 per week using your debit card abroad. You can change your card limit temporarily or permanently using Rabo Internet Banking. NB: foreign banks may apply a lower limit. We have no influence over this.
You can make contactless payments abroad if both your debit card and the card reader support this. This is the case if the contactless payment logo is displayed on both your debit card and the card reader.
Contactless payments using your phone abroad
If you have a debit card in the Apple Wallet on your iPhone, or in the Google Wallet on your Android phone, you can use it to make contactless payments abroad. All the information applying to the use of debit cards abroad also applies to contactless payments made with your phone. The only difference is that contactless money withdrawals from ATMs are not yet possible. In the case of Apple Pay, you must ‘switch on’ your debit card to use it outside Europe. The quickest way to do this is by using Rabo Internet Banking.
You can calculate the exchange rate for a foreign currency using Rabo Internet Banking. Go to Settings – debit cards and credit cards – debit cards. Next, select the correct debit card. Select ‘Calculate foreign exchange rate’.
If you don’t use Rabo Internet Banking, you can calculate the exchange rate using the link below.
