Your debit card abroad

Making payments in a foreign currency or euros at card readers in stores is quick and easy.

Fees for making payments abroad

You don’t pay additional fees for euro payments made using your debit card abroad. If you use your debit card to pay in a foreign currency, we apply an exchange rate surcharge of 1.4% per payment.

Limits applying to card readers abroad

You can spend up to €5,000 a week using your debit card abroad. If you have a Rabo Youth Account, the maximum is €1,250 per week. If you have a Rabo Premium Package, you can spend up to €10,000 a week using your card abroad. NB: foreign banks may apply a lower limit. We have no influence over this.

Extra tips for making payments abroad

Never hand someone else your debit card or credit card when making a payment. If you’re in a country where the euro is not the currency, card readers let you choose between euros and the country’s national currency. It often works out better to pay in the currency of the country where you are than in euros. Ordering foreign currency in the Netherlands before you travel is also more expensive.
