Depending on which debit card you have, the standard setting enables you to make payments and withdraw money throughout Europe or around the world.
Configuring your debit card for use outside Europe
Your debit card’s standard setting enables use within Europe. If you’d like to use your card outside Europe, you can change the setting.
Debit card abroad
Whether you are paying in foreign currency or in euros, you can pay quickly and easily at any in-store payment terminal.
Fees for paying abroad
You do not pay extra fees when you use your debit card to pay in euros abroad. Paying with your debit card in foreign currency? We charge an exchange rate surcharge of 1.4% per payment.
Payment terminal limits abroad
Abroad, you can use your debit card to pay up to €5,000 per week. With a Rabo Youth Account, the limit is €1,250 per week.
Abroad, you can use your debit card to withdraw cash quickly and easily from an ATM. You can also withdraw foreign currency. Fees apply. The amount you pay depends on your package. Read more about fees, terms and conditions
In addition to these fees, foreign banks may also charge their own fees for using the ATM and/or apply a less favorable exchange rate. You’ll see these fees on the ATM screen.
Abroad, you can use your debit card to withdraw up to €1,250 in cash per week. With a Rabo Youth Account, the limit is €500 per week.
You can temporarily or permanently change your card limit yourself in Rabo Online Banking.
Please note: foreign banks may apply a lower limit. We have no influence over this.
You can make contactless payments abroad if your debit card and the payment terminal support this. You can check this by looking for the contactless payment logo on your debit card and on the payment terminal.
Contactless payments with your phone abroad
Do you have a debit card in Apple Wallet on your iPhone, or in Google Wallet on your Android phone? Then you can also use it to make contactless payments abroad.
Everything that applies to your debit card abroad also applies to contactless payments with your phone. The only thing you can’t do yet is withdraw cash from an ATM.
For Apple Pay, you do need to enable your debit card for use outside Europe. The fastest way to do this is in Rabo Online Banking.
You can calculate the exchange rate for foreign currency in Rabo Online Banking. Go to Settings – Debit cards and credit cards – Debit cards and select the right debit card. Choose Calculate foreign currency.
