Spoofing

In spoofing, the criminal hides who is actually sending the message. These are usually telephone numbers, which means that a call, text message or WhatsApp message appears to originate from Rabobank when that is not the case. But criminals also do this with email addresses and website links.

Website

With websites, criminals often use an address that is very similar to the genuine address, but ever so slightly different. For example, by using a zero instead of the letter ‘o’. Or a capital letter I (i) instead of the lower case letter l (L). If you read it quickly there doesn’t seem to be much wrong with ‘0pIetten’. But it actually says ‘zeropietten’.

Telephone

Telephone number spoofing works differently. When a criminal calls, you do actually see the bank’s number on your screen. It’s a very deceptive technique, because you can’t figure out whether you really are speaking to someone from the bank simply by checking the number. So don’t reveal any personal data and ask critical questions. Or hang up and call the number of the bank you know is genuine.

Spoofing does not work the other way around: if you call us on our number, you are actually calling Rabobank. So always call the number you have for us, preferably by calling via the Rabo App.

With other types of fraud, scammers often use spoofing when first making contact. Examples include:

Spoofing van telefoonnummers werkt anders. Daarbij staat er echt het nummer van de bank op je scherm als de crimineel belt. Het is een verraderlijke techniek, want je kunt er dus niet achterkomen of je wel echt iemand van de bank aan de lijn hebt door het nummer te controleren. Geef dus niet zomaar persoonlijke gegevens en stel kritische vragen. Of hang op en bel zelf naar het nummer van de bank dat je kent.

Omgekeerd werkt spoofing namelijk niet: als je ons belt op ons nummer bel je ook echt met Rabobank. Bel dus wel altijd het nummer dat je van ons kent, bij voorkeur door te bellen via de Rabo App.

Spoofing kan ook via sms gebeuren. Daarbij lijkt het sms-bericht van Rabobank te komen, maar dit is niet zo. Dit is een verraderlijke techniek, want je kunt er niet achterkomen of de bank jou wel of niet het sms-bericht heeft gestuurd. Klik dus nooit op een link en bel niet zomaar het telefoonnummer dat in het sms-bericht staat.
