Let's see what happens?

YTD, the USD has depreciated significantly against major currencies but not so much against the offshore yuan. We consider different factors determining the value of USD/CNH in order to see whether this means a weaker or stronger exchange rate. We show that different factors have a different impact on the expected direction of USD/CNH. We then conclude that we expect a gradual strengthening of the renminbi vis a vis the USD.
